Building Together

Building RossendaleThe Phenomenex UK team spent two exceptionally fulfilling days working with The Rossendale Trust, an organization that provides supported living care to adults with learning and physical disabilities in their local area. The Rossendale Trust grew from the determination of two families who saw an urgent need for resources for those with disabilities in their community, and decided to take action.

In the late 1960s, Alan and Mary Chapman worried that their son Richard, born with a learning disability, wasn't receiving what he needed through the day service he attended. Looking around, the Chapmans quickly noticed they were not alone; they became increasingly aware of the startling lack of resources offered to families with disabled children. The Chapmans decided to look for a house they could convert into a "short stay", a respite home for children with disabilities. Their vision was to provide a safe, modern accommodation that families could trust to care for and treat their disabled children as individuals. In December 1972, the Chapmans and another family, the Hydes, bought the Rossendale Hall and Lodge by raising the money from the sale of their own homes, plus a donation from a local benefactor and the subsequent sale of the Lodge. Both families moved into the Hall in the spring of 1973.
